Depression is anger turned inward. It leads to self-destruction, self-isolation, and a desire to hide from the realities of life, to retreat into the shadows. Freud described depression as frozen fear, accompanied by constant feelings of hopelessness and helplessness. A person can easily slip into a black hole where these emotions and sensations spiral upward and feed off each other.
